Present from the first santonnières nurseries, shepherd figures prominently in ancient Provençal life. Accompanied by their dogs to drive and monitor the herds, the shepherds left the valley late May to pastures at altitude.
The supported shepherd is a young man. He has a canteen and a haversack containing meal. In his hands he holds a long stick. He wears a coarse cloth pants, gaiters of skin covering his shoes, a long cape homespun (limousine) on the shoulders and wearing a black felt hat with wide brim.
