Priest placed at the head of a ward. To a purist, a priest in the crib may seem surprising, since in effect it is the representative of Christ and that he has been born! But Provençaux take it to be present because it is among the personalities of the village. Marcel Carbonel is the two different attitudes:
The priest at the handkerchief, bareheaded, wiping his forehead with a large handkerchief (lou moucadou) red and white plaid, wearing a black cassock.
The priest at the umbrella, wearing the traditional red umbrella (respectability sign in Provence), a large black hat and holding his breviary with gilt edges by hand.
